Amherst, New Hampshire
Amherst, New Hampshire is located in southern Hillsborough County, about 10 miles west of downtown Nashua, NH. With a population of a little over 10,000 citizens and an area of 34.8 square miles, Amherst has grown into a suburban community with many recent newcomers. Amherst has maintained its small town feel while offering proximity to many amenities and larger towns, making it a very desirable place to live.

Incorporated in 1760, the town of Amherst was named after Lord Jeffrey Amherst, commander-in-chief in the French and Indian war. Amherst, has a long colonial history, and was an important New Hampshire hub until the railroads bypassed the center of town in the 19th century.

The town had done an impressive job in keeping Amherst village quaint and like something out of the past. Many historic buildings are well preserved in the center of town. The village green serves as a community gathering spot, and Fourth of July parades, Christmas tree lightings, and band concerts still occur on site due to considerable public volunteer work that makes them happen every year.
Amherst is most easily accessed by State Route 101 (traveling east to west) and is within easy commuting distance to many of the areas largest cities, attractions and employers. While many Amherst residents run small businesses in town, many others work in neighboring Manchester or Nashua, or even commute further south to jobs in Massachussetts. Amherst is 36 miles from Keene, 14 miles from Manchester, 10 miles from Nashua, 62 miles to Portsmouth and 48 miles to Boston, MA.
