The Longwood Medical and Academic Area (also referred to ask the Longwood Medical Area, LMA, or just Longwood) is an area in Boston, Massachusetts that boasts a very high density of hospitals, colleges, and biomedical research centers.

The Longwood Medical Area can be located between the Fenway/Kenmore areas and Mission Hill. It is centered on Longwood Avenue and runs between Huntington Avenue and Brookline Avenue. The MBTA Green Line stop services both of these intersections. (Longwood at Brookline - Green Line "D" Train) and Longwood Medical Area at Huntington Ave - Green Line "E" Train.

The Medical Academic and Scientific Community Organization, Inc. (MASCO) is made up of the major institutions in the area, and offers shared services (shuttle buses, telecommunications, parking, etc.) for its members. The members of MASCO are all located in the Longwood Medical Area, and include the following hospitals and schools:

Many years ago, The Longwood Medical Area was once residential housing with small medical institutions located in and among the large lots. In the fifties, the surrounding area began a slow decline, but the hospitals and schools grew tremendously, to what they are today. Harvard Medical built a new library, The Harvard School of Public Health biult a large auditorium across its Huntington Avenue frontage, that stretched for the entire block. Other institutions have expanded and built, with criticism coming from various people that the area had turned it's back on the surrounding neighborhoods and residential areas.

In the past decade, there has been a remarkable change in an effort to add public open spaces and affordable housing to the mix, in order to cater to those working and attending school in the Longwood Medical Area. A certain degree of gentrification has taken hold in this neighborhood, along with a subsequent rise in rents and property values, similar to most neighborhoods in the city of Boston.
